Psalm 23

The Good Shepherd

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want,
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
he leads me beside the still waters, he restores my soul.
He guides me through the right paths for His name's sake.
Although I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I fear no evil, for you are beside me:
your rod and your staff comfort me.
You spread a table before me.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflowing.
Goodness and kindness will follow me all the days of my life,
i shall dwell in the house of the Lord as long as I live.

June 30, 2011....First Martyrs of the Church of Rome

Today's feast honors the countless martyrs who were killed by the mad Emperor Nero because of the fire in Rome he had blamed on them. Cruel and inhuman tortures were inflicted on the brave Christian community. the church was persecuted more or less intensely from 64 to 314 AD.

Let us pray especially today to those nameless Christian heroes and beg them for the courage to face the obstacles to faith in our day with the bravery with which they faced death itself.

June 29, Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul

St. Peter, the prince of the Apostles, was a fisherman from Bethsaida in Galilee. After being called he left everything to follow Christ ( Mark 1:17). At caesarea Philippin, Jesus changed his name of Simon into Peter (Rock). Peter was constantly at Jesus' side, and nonetheless denied him three times. And for three times Jesus asked Peter to confirm his love for him (John 21:15). After the Ascension, Peter directed the election of Matthias, and boldly proclaimed that Jesus was the Messiah. After he Council of Jerusalem in 49, Peter went to preach the Gospel in Rome, where he was crucified downwards on Vatican Hill during the persecution in 64.

St. Paul, the Apostle of the Gentiles, was a zealous Pharisee from Tarsus. He was converted on his way to Damascus (Acts 9:18), and thereafter preached the Good News throughout Asia and Greece, where he founded many churches. To these he wrote the so-called Letters of St. Paul, which  are now listed in The New Testament. On his last visit to Jerusalem, he was arrested by fellow Jews and charged with blasphemy. being a Roman Citizen, he demanded to have his case decided by the emperor himself. He was beheaded  along Ostiense Way in the year 64. Over the Shrines of the two greatest apostles, Constantine built the magnificent basilicas of St. Peter and St. Paul.

June 27, Feast day of St. Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop and doctor

St. Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria, was born in Egypt in 370. after his ordination he assisted his uncle, the Bishop of Alexandria, whom he succeeded in 412. He was known as the Doctor of incarnation, since he strenuously defended the Divine Maternity of the Blessed Mother against Nestorianism. After Cyril was appointed as Bishop of Constantinople in 428. Nestorius began preaching that there were two distinct persons in Christ, that of God and that of man, joined only by a moral union. Consequently, he denied the Incarnation and the Divine Motherhood of Mary. Cyril presided over the Council of Ephesus in 431, at which Nestorius was excommunicated by order of Pope St. Celestine I. St Cyril spent the rest of his life writing apologetical books in defense of the Catholic Faith. he died in 444, and was ordained a Doctor of the Church in 1882.

Prayer for Physical Healing

taken from the book, Straight from the Heart, A Prayer companion as compiled and edited by Rev. Fr. Mario Jose C. Ladra

Heavenly Father,

I call on you right now in a special way.
it is through your power that I was created.
Every breath I take,  every morning I wake,
and every moment of every hour
I live under your power.

Father, I ask you now to touch me
with the same power.
For it you created me from nothing,
you can certainly recreated me.
Fill me with healing power of your Spirit.
Cast out anything that should not be in me.
Mend what is broken.
Root out any unproductive cells.

Open any blocked arteries or veins
and rebuild any damaged areas.
remove all inflammation
and cleanse any infection.

Let the warmth of your healing love
pass through my body
to make new any unhealthy areas
so that my body will function the way
you created it to function.

And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body
to make new any unhealthy areas
so that I may serve you the rest of my life.

I ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

June 25, 2011...Psalm 91

The Psalm prayed by members of the biggest Catholic Charismatric group,
El Shaddai Prayer Partners Foundation International

Soldier's Psalm 91 Prayer

By Harriet Yoder

O Lord Most High, help me to dwell in your secret place and abide under Your shadow.
Help me to believe and say out loud for everyone to hear that You are my refuge and my fortress; that You are my God; and that in You I put my trust.
O Lord God Almighty, please deliver me from hidden traps and diseases.
Father God, cover me with Your camouflage; hide me under Your wings; and let Your truth be my shield and buckler against the fiery darts—the lies—of the enemy.
Lord Jesus, help me not to be afraid of terrorists' attacks in the night; or weapons that fly by day; or sicknesses that walk in darkness; or destruction that wastes at noonday.
O Holy God, though a thousand fall at my side, and ten thousand fall at my right hand; please let it not come close to me and my companions.
O Lord Most High, let me live to see the reward of the wicked, because You are my refuge and my home. Let no evil conquer me and let no plague come into my house or near my family.
O Lord, my Strength and my Redeemer, please set angels over me to keep me in all Your ways, to bear me up in their hands and to keep my feet from stumbling.
Father God, help me to tread upon the lion and adder and trample the young lion and the dragon under my feet.
Lord Jesus, I love you with all my heart and I know Your name. Deliver me and lift me on high to soar with the eagles. I call upon you to be with me in times of trouble to deliver and honor me because I know Your name. Please show me Your salvation and satisfy me with a long life.
I ask this prayer in the name of Jesus Christ
Amen.

June 24, Feast of St. john the Baptist

Did you know that St. John the Baptist is the Patron Saint of Quiapo, and not the Black Nazarene? and that  Quiapo church, now known as Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene, was formerly known as The Church of St. john the Baptist?

The church commemorates the birth rather than the death of St. john, as is the custom with other saints, because he was sanctified while yet in his mother's womb. August 29th is the feast of the saint's martyrdom.
In imitation of St. John the Baptist, or Baptizer, let us, too, spend some time every day in prayer and meditation, so as to "make way for the Lord" in our own soul.

June 23, Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving

Let us give thanks because God has given us senses to enable us to grasp and know the world around us, especially our eyes, our hearing, our  taste and our smell. Let us give thanks because the son of God executed the design of the visible and invisible word: "through him was made everything that has been made." he is the first revelation of the divine attributes. let us thank God for having given us the light of the reason; for having designed to reveal to St. john the evangelist truths about paradise; for having given us the Church, guardian and interpreter of revelation and infallible teacher of truth; and for having infused in us the gift of faith and baptism.

Thanksgiving Prayers

For Appreciation of Each Other
We thank you, Father, for the gift of Jesus your Son who came to our earth and lived in a simple home. We have a greater appreciation of the value and dignity of the human family because he loved and was loved within its shelter. Bless us this day; may we grow in love for each other in our family and so give thanks to you who are the maker of all human families and our abiding peace.

.In Gratitude
Thank you, Father, for having created us and given us to each other in the human family. Thank you for being with us in all our joys and sorrows, for your comfort in our sadness, your companionship in our loneliness. Thank you for yesterday, today, tomorrow and for the whole of our lives. Thank you for friends, for health and for grace. May we live this and every day conscious of all that has been given to us.

Prayer at Harvest and Thanksgiving

O God, source and giver of all things,
You manifest your infinite majesty, power and goodness
In the earth about us:
We give you honor and glory.
For the sun and the rain,
For the manifold fruits of our fields:
For the increase of our herds and flocks,
We thank you.
For the enrichment of our souls with divine grace,
We are grateful.

Supreme Lord of the harvest,
Graciously accept us and the fruits of our toil,
In union with Jesus, your Son,
As atonement for our sins,
For the growth of your Church,
For peace and love in our homes,
And for salvation for all.
We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer of Thanksgiving
  Walter Rauschenbusch

O God, we thank you for this earth, our home;
For the wide sky and the blessed sun,
For the salt sea and the running water,
For the everlasting hills
And the never-resting winds,
For trees and the common grass underfoot.
We thank you for our senses
By which we hear the songs of birds,
And see the splendor of the summer fields,
And taste of the autumn fruits,
And rejoice in the feel of the snow,
And smell the breath of the spring.
Grant us a heart wide open to all this beauty;
And save our souls from being so blind
That we pass unseeing
When even the common thornbush
Is aflame with your glory,
O God our creator,
Who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

June 22, Feast day of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas Moore

St. John Fisher

Sts. John fisher and Thomas Moore are the most outstanding English martyrs who were killed during the persecution of  King Henry VIII. the problem started in 1527, when Pope clement Vii refused to declare null the King's marriage with Catherine Aragon, his spouse for 18 years. The King, wanted to have A son to Anne Boyle, was maddened by the denial and separated from Rome in 1534, with the act of supremacy, he appointed himself the sovereign of the Anglican Church, and began persecuting those who remained catholic. the martyrs of England, as they are known, were tortured in barbarous manner. some were out on the rack and dismembered; others were hanged and eviscerated while still alive

St. John fisher, Bishop of Rochester, was imprisoned in London Tower after he refused to acknowledge the King as supreme head of the church of England. He was beheaded in 1535 and his head was displayed on London Bridge for several days. he died with the holy Gospel in his hands and pronouncing words of pardon for his executioner.

St. Thomas Moore

St. Thomas Moore, the Great Chancellor, preferred to disobey the King rather than God. a devout Catholic and prestigious lawyer, in 1527 he refused to support Henry VIII's claim for a divorce. five years later, he resigned from his office rather than separate from the Catholic Church. he too was convicted of treason and beheaded in 1535. before his death, he said: I am the king's servant, but God,s first.

Born in 1568, St Aloysius was the son of a high dignitary in the Spanish court. A Father's Prayer

O God, help me to be true to the great privilege
and great responsibility which you have given to me.
Help me to be an example and a friend
to my children,
and a real partner to my wife
Don't let me get so busy
with work and with outside things
that I am almost a stranger
in my own home,
and that I take no interest
in household things.
Don't let me take for granted
all that is done for me,
and help me to keep love alive
within the home.

Keep me from habits
which make the work of the house harder,
and from ways which irritate and annoy,
or which get on the nerves
of those who live with me.

Give me health and strength
and work to do,
to earn a living
for those who who depend on me
and whom I love so much;
but help me to remember
that love is always
more important than money.

O God, you have given me
the name of father;
you have given me your own name;
help me to be true to it.

this I ask for your love's sake.
AMEN

June 19, is the Feast Day of St. Romuald, Abbot

St. Romuald, Abbot (950 - 1027)

St. Romuald, founder of the Camaldolese Monks, was born in Ravenna, Italy. Son of a noble family, he grew up in a worldly youth. He witnessed his father killing a relative in a duel over a land property that he fled to the monastery of San Apollinare, leading a life of prayer and penance. His father, following his example, repented of his crime and spent the rest of his life in the monastery of San Severo. Three years later, Romuald became a victim of a calumny and was forced to leave the monastery.

For 30 years he traveled various lands seeking solitude and establishing small monasteries.  He established a new order of the monks in Camaldoli, near Arezzo, known as the Camaldolese. He was later accused of a scandalous crime by a young nobleman. His monks believed him and excommunicated him. He bore all the silence in six months, but then the truth came out and he was re-installed. He died in the monastery of Castro, near Ancona, in 1027

Be Strong ! ….. by Maltbie D. Bobcock

Be Strong!
We are not here to play, to dream, to drift;
We have hard work to do and loads to lift;
Shun, not the struggle – face it , ‘tis God’s gift.

Be Strong!
Say not – “The days are evil. Who’s to blame?’
And fold the hands and acquiesce
--- oh, shame!

Stand up, speak out, and bravely in God’s name.
Be strong !
It matters not how deep entrenched the wrong;
Faint not – fight on! Tomorrow
Comes the song.

Prayer to Blessed Pedro Calungsod

Blessed Pedro Calungsod was born in Cebu in the 17th century. He was a catechist. He  read, write and speak Bisaya, Spanish and even Chamorro. his mentor, Father Diego Sanvictores, brought him to Saipan.  Both were martyred for refusing to renounce their faith.
His body  was thrown into the sea. A shrine was built in his honor along the seashore. He was beatified on March 5, 2005, a three-feet statue was brought to Guam Cathedral by Cardinal Vidal immediately after his beatification.
There are reports swirling that  Blessed Pedro Calungsod's canonization has just been approved and that a date for the canonization is about to be set.

Almighty Father,
You gave young Pedro Calungsod to faithfully live
and proclaim the Gospel up to the point of shedding his blood.

By his example and prayers,
may we also give witness to our christian faith
even in the face of dangers and difficulties.

We ask this through our Lord,
Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you
and the Holy Spirit,
one God, forever and ever.

Amen.
