St. Barnabas, a cousin of St. Mark was a Hebrew born in Cyprus. His name was Joseph was later changed by the apostles to Barnabas, which means "Son of Encouragement (Acts 4:36) because of his kind and optimistic nature. Barnabas sold his land and brought the price to the apostles. He St Paul went to Jerusalem, it was Barnabas who took charge and brought him to the apostles (Acts 9:27). He accompanied St. Paul to the cities of Asia Minor. Traditions says he was stoned to death at Salamis during the persecution of the 60's.
